As the second 2017 summer session came to a close, resident assistants did their rounds one last time among the 25 students living in Greeley College. The occupancy of one of the single-person rooms, to the RAs’ surprise, included a baby Asian elephant. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” James Jameson, a Greeley RA, said. “That kid actually managed to domesticate an elephant in his 1-by-3-foot closet.” All the talks around the RA office since then, Jameson said, have been speculations of how 19-year-old Jimmy John Jenkins actually succeeded acquiring and maintaining the animal. The students living in rooms near Jenkins’, however, wondered how the RAs passed over their rooms so obliviously during room inspections. “The RA knocked on the door while I was making a house out of my empty beer cans, and I’m pretty sure I had just ripped the bong a minute earlier in my boy’s room,”…

It all started when Stony Brook University’s Black Lives Matter movement stood with Mizzou in Nov. 2015. Stony Brook students requested a platform to voice their concerns on campus diversity issues. The school’s administration complied by providing a space for dialogue, Judith Greiman, Chief Deputy to the President and Vice President for Government and Community Relations, said. “[President] Stanley made a deep commitment to them that we would put together a broad-based plan and implement it,” Greiman said. In December, they released an initial draft of the diversity plan for the community to critique. It came back with approximately 130 comments, and was reworked around four key goals: To improve the diversity of the Stony Brook community through enhanced recruitment and retention. To expand educational, research, healthcare and other efforts to ensure that students are able to thrive on campus and as global citizens in a diverse society. To support…

With major changes to the meal plan system going into effect this semester, choosing the meal plan you want has become more difficult than expected. There are 10 different meal plan options with 10 different prices for returning resident students to select from as well as five different options for first-year resident students and three options for commuter and apartment students. Obviously this system is a bit complicated. Exhausting your meal points before finals, though, will no longer be a semesterly worry for students because of the changeover to a numerical or unlimited amount of meal swipes per week at Dine-in locations, which can be found at West Side Dining, Union Commons, Roth Café and East Side Dining at Toll Drive(when it opens). That’s definitely a relief? Although you can still run out of meal swipes for a given week if your plan only allows for seven or ten meals,…

Stony Brook men’s basketball, led by the premier low-post star Jameel Warney, held the longest winning streak of the season in Division I with 18 straight. Yet a loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament is likely. Stony Brook finished with a 26-6 record and earned a 13 seed in the bracket and matches up against a Kentucky squad that received a 4 seed and finished the season 26-8. Although the Seawolves never appeared in the Top 25, Warney has blown up and may provide the push they need to mask the talent gap between their team as a whole and the red-hot, widely acclaimed Kentucky Wildcats. Warney averaged 30.3 points and 15 rebounds while shooting 61 percent from the floor in the America East Conference Tournament and scored 43 in the championship game against Vermont. The numbers relay the recommendation to feed the ball down low to…

When a tree falls in the middle of the forest, most people won’t hear its thump. when a different tree in that forest jumps up and blocks seven shots in his 14th career NBA game, basketball fans and analysts conjure up nicknames like Shaq-Zingis. The New York Knicks snagged Kristaps Porzingis, the 7-foot-3-inch 20-year-old big man out of Latvia, off the board during the 2015 NBA Draft last June as the fourth overall pick. Averaging 13.7 points, 9.1 rebounds and a block and a half per game, Porzingis is present on rookie leaderboards in several stat categories since the season’s commencement. From the franchise’s point of view, however, the most riveting numbers this season lie in the standings, and a healthy chunk of the Knicks’ improvement from last year’s forgettable 17-win turnout can be credited to Porzingis’ performance on the low block. For multiple seasons, New York has driven their…

The recent surge in popularity of athletic-style clothing amongst millennials has led to a decline in the sales of denim apparel, dealing a financial blow to mall owners and operators that house popular denim-oriented stores like Gap, according to the company’s press release. Sales of “athleisure” clothing, or athletic apparel that people could wear outside of an athletic setting, have sharply increased over the past couple of years. United States consumers spent $323 billion on apparel, footwear and accessories in 2014, an increase of one-percent from 2013 that equates to about two billion in sales driven by the popularity of activewear, athletic performance footwear and bags, while denim sales saw a six-percent decrease in 2014, according to research from The NPD Group. The switch to athleisure in American society figures to continue growing, according to Rebekah Burroway, a sociology professor at Stony Brook University. “I think that the switch to…

Small quantities of THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the main chemical responsible for marijuana’s psychological effects, could be engineered from yeast, according to a paper published in August  by  scientists at the Technical University of Dortmund in Germany. With New York recently permitting five select medical marijuana companies to open dispensaries across the state, these companies, along with medical marijuana companies all over the nation, now have the question of whether this development could be used to supplement their supplies of conventional marijuana. PharmaCannis, one of the five companies selected to open up dispensaries in New York, will be required to open its doors at the beginning of 2016 in the counties of Hamptonburgh, Orange County as well as towns in the Bronx and Albany. For PharmaCannis, there does not seem to be a use for synthetic THC since the company grows a sufficient amount of conventional marijuana, said Patty Park,  an…

Although Deron Williams, the aging floor general, has packed his bags to play for the Mavericks in Dallas, more room is available on the depth chart for the Brooklyn Nets for young talent. A squad once built around veterans is one step closer to becoming an era of Brooklyn’s past as Williams departs, following in the footsteps of forwards Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Forward Joe Johnson is the final remaining renowned vet left on the team. However, aside from his current listing as starting small forward, Johnson will surely play some mentor basketball with the roster’s youth at positions he knows well: shooting guard and both forward positions. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, a highly scouted forward out of Arizona, stands second on the depth chart at the three spot, directly under Johnson’s wing. The rookie can surely learn from the 37-year-old Johnson shooting-wise, yet Hollis-Jefferson’s defensive motor and instinct are quite…
