Ever get sick of eating campus food? Well, if you’re a student that doesn’t have access to a car, your choices of off-campus foods are scarce and most likely dictated by a bus schedule.
Luckily, there’s actually great (and cheap) food that you can get to just by taking a short walk across the Long Island Railroad Station on campus.
I already had high expectations for The Green Cactus Fresh Mexican Grill prior to arriving there because I happen to love Mexican food, and I was excited to potentially find somewhere besides Picantes to enjoy it. At first glance, the restaurant looks like it would be a typical restaurant where you would be waited upon. But when I stepped inside, I was both surprised and happy to find that the eatery follows in the footsteps of fast-casual food places like Panera Bread or Chipotle.
The Green Cactus is very clean and well taken care of, which makes it even more inviting because, let’s be honest, no one wants to eat in a dump. The set-up is pretty simple with a large menu above the counter where the customers order and a wide room complete with booths, high tables, and chairs where people can relax and enjoy their meals.
On the menu, there was a huge variety of different things to choose from with prices ranging from about $3 to $10. I decided, in the spirit of being a seawolf, that I would get the traditional burrito bowl, otherwise known as a naked burrito. I ordered my bowl with rice, black beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, cheese and chicken. The bowl also came with chips and a drink on the side. All together I paid about $8, which is just about the same that you would pay at Picantes. In addition to the amazing portion size they give you, everything was super fresh, hot and very tasty. They don’t give you salsa with your chips because you have the opportunity to choose at their free salsa bar, which ranges nicely from sweet to spicy.
After I finished my bowl, I ended up getting a churro, which was only a dollar. The churros are also made fresh, so it was the perfect sweet snack to end my meal with.
Overall the customer service was excellent, the experience was great and I’m glad that I went. I wish The Green Cactus added delivery to their services because I would definitely be taking advantage of it.
I give The Green Cactus Fresh Mexican Grill five out of five stars, and I will be going back soon.
