The Stony Brook Seawolves (2-6) struggles continue to linger on the road this season. They got shut out by Appalachian State (2-8) by an outstanding pitching performance by freshman left-handed pitcher Bobby Hampton.

The 5’10” 194 lb pitcher out of Pikeville, N.C. only allowed two hits in seven innings and recorded four strikeouts and two walks in his first career win as a Mountaineer. Appalachian State’s 4-0 win over SBU snaps a three-game losing streak with previous losses to Quinnipiac twice and North Carolina Central.

Junior pitcher Cameron Stone earned his second loss of the season. He allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings pitched. He also had four strikeouts.

Appalachian State’s sophomore left fielder led off the bottom of the second inning and crushed a solo homer to left field, giving the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead. That home run would go on to be all Appalachian State needed to win.

SBU junior center fielder Toby Handley, sophomore shortstop Bobby Honeyman and sophomore first baseman Andruw Gazzola were the only three Seawolves to earn hits against the Mountaineers’ solid pitching. Gazzola hit a double to center in the first inning; Honeyman singled to center in the third, which extended his hitting streak to a career-high eight games; and Handley hit a single to center in the eighth. Handley has now reached base safely in ten straight games. SBU had five runners left on base while Appalachian State had three left on base the whole game.

During the fifth inning, the Mountaineers began to pull away with three runs on three hits. Sophomore catcher Chandler Seagle batted second in the inning and was hit by a pitch. He later scored on junior center fielder Brian Bauk’s single. Freshman designated hitter Colin Schmid hit a two-RBI single to right field. Bauk and freshman infielder Jason Curtis scored on the play and extended the lead to 4-0.

Schmid was the only player with two hits in the game and five other Mountaineers each contributed one hit.

Senior Tim Knesnik relieved for Stone and did not allow a hit. He had four strikeouts in two innings.

Stony Brook’s next opponent is the team hosting the weekend tournament, which is Elon (4-6), at 12:30 p.m. at Latham Park in Elon, N.C.
