On a humid night of Monday Night Football, The New York Giants (6-7) visited Sun Life Stadium to play the Miami Dolphins (5-8) in a critical game. The Giants came to play and won 31-24 thanks to some big plays by Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Also, Stony Brook alum and Giants rookie tight end Will Tye put himself in the Stony Brook record books.
At Stony Brook, Tye was a scoring machine. In 23 games played, he had 1,015 yards receiving, averaged 13.1 yards a game and had nine touchdowns in two seasons. He played football at Florida State his freshman year and then transferred to Stony Brook, which meant he had to sit out his sophomore year.
Tye caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning which tied the game at 17 early in the second quarter. He had five receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown in the victory. The 6-3 260 pound tight end out of Middletown, CT has been filling the huge void for Giants starting tight end Larry Donnell who is on injured reserve with a neck injury. Tye has 29 catches and 326 yards receiving through 13 games this season. He has been on a tear the last four games; he’s had 19 catches for 249 yards and one touchdown. Tye’s touchdown is a milestone because he is the first ever from Stony Brook University to score a touchdown in the NFL.
Tye made history but the night belonged to quarterback Eli Manning, and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Manning arguably had one of the best performances of his career. He only threw four incompletions and completed his passes 27 times for 337 yards along with four touchdowns. Manning threw two touchdowns to Beckham Jr., one to Tye and one to Rueben Randle. Beckham Jr.had seven catches for a season-high 166 receiving yards and caught two touchdowns. Beckham has played 25 career games and has hauled in 24 touchdowns.
The Dolphins scored the first touchdown which was in the first quarter with the help of some poor tackling by the Giants. Dolphins running back Lamar Miller scampered into the endzone for a 14-yard touchdown. He then scored in the second quarter with a bigger run as he finagled around the Giants defensive line and broke a few tackles to score a 38-yard rushing touchdown. He concluded the night with 12 carries for 89 rushing yards with those two touchdowns.
Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw 25 completions for 236 yards with a 47-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stills in the third quarter. Wide receiver Jarvis Landry led the game in receptions overall with 11 and had 99 receiving yards. Landry is tied with New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall for the league lead in receptions amongst wide receivers with 89.
It was a big win for the Giants in Week 13. It’s now a three-way tie in the NFC East between the Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles and the Giants. They all have a record of 6-7. The Dolphins fall to 5-8 which is last in the AFC East.
The Giants have the ultimate test on Dec. 20 facing Cam Newton and the undefeated Carolina Panthers on Week 14. Expect that to be a very intense game.
