It was a no-contest in a 103-32 blowout victory for the Stony Brook Seawolves on Saturday night when they on a Division III school in Kings Point, United States Merchant Military Academy Mariners.
Stony Brook did not let up since the opening tip. They led the entire game with ease, and six players reached double figures while USMMA did not have a single player in double digits .
It was a team contribution in the win with 11 players getting minutes. Senior point guard Carson Puriefoy led the Seawolves in scoring with 19 points in 21 minutes and senior forward Jameel Warney, to no surprise, started the season with a double-double. He racked up 16 points and 14 rebounds along with two blocks in 22 minutes..
The Seawolves took over and outnumbered the Mariners in every aspect of the game. Coach Pikiell said before the season started that the team prides itself on rebounding. The Seawolves corralled 62 total rebounds and the Mariners got half of that, pulling down 31. Jameel Warney and Tyrell Sturdivant combined for 27 rebounds alone.
The Mariners struggled mightily on offense tonight as they turned the ball over 17 times. Senior guard David Smith shot the ball poorly only making one shot out of his 14 attempts. He went 0-12 from three point range. It was the senior center Andrew Williams who played the most efficient for the Mariners, scoring seven points and went three of five from the field in 16 minutes.
The transfer out of Barton Community College in Kansas, junior guard Ahmad Walker filled up the stat sheet in his first game at Stony Brook. He finished with 17 points and did not miss a shot from the field making all four of his shots. He went to the foul line 11 times and was able to make eight. He contributed with a game-high six assists, two steals, one block and five rebounds.
“The crowd was great,” Walker said. “I have great teammates, and they told me to be aggressive and try to get the ball in transition, and it kind of just worked out that way.”
Roland Nyama got the start in place of senior forward Rayshaun McGrew who did not play under disclosed reasoning. The sophomore forward out of Frankfurt, Germany had a stellar game. He was one rebound shy of a double-double scoring 12 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Deshaun Thrower received valuable minutes off the bench and put up 11 points with four rebounds and a block.
After being a redshirt freshman last year and sitting out the whole season as a sophomore, junior guard Lucas Woodhouse played very well in his first game as a Seawolf. He was able to put up double-digit points with 10 in his first career start and added three assists and two steals.
“I just wanted to win,” Woodhouse said. ”I needed to [get] the game under my belt, and I’m looking forward to the next one.”
The Seawolves are now 7-4 in home openers under Coach Pikiell. However Pikiell is putting the Seawolves to the test with competitive opponents on the road. Their next game will be on Thursday Nov.19 at Vanderbilt. This year’s Seawolves team with Woodhouse and Nyama looks to be highly versatile and has deep depth in the roster.
