The Miami Marlins (62-83) defeated the sizzling New York Mets (83-62) on Tuesday night 9-3 in Citi Field. Stony Brook alumni Tom Koehler received his 10th win of the season. He is now 10-13.
The Miami Marlins pitcher struck out four, let up five hits and allowed only one run in six innings of play. His offense was able to contribute nicely with runs batted in by Dee Gordon, Christian Yelich, Martin Prado, Justin Bour and Marcell Ozuna. Gordon had a career night going 4-5 with a two-run home run in the ninth inning. He leads the major league in hits with 180 this season.
Koehler is not a pitcher whose tendency is striking out batters. He is more prone to get ground ball outs by keeping the ball down in the strike zone. However he keeps batters bewildered by mixing up his repertoire of pitches. He was able to do that to beat the New York Mets at home for the first time this season. The Mets are 46-25 at home this season and are third in wins in the National League this year behind the St. Louis Cardinals (50) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (48). Koehler also snapped New York’s torching eight-game winning streak.
The Stony Brook alum is bouncing back in the month of September with three wins in three starts after suffering miserably in the month of August, losing every start that month. He had an Earned Runs Allowed of 6.68 in the month of August and has rejuvenated himself in September with an ERA of 2.57.
The 29-year old is coming off a solid win in his last start at home against the Milwaukee Brewers. He recorded a season-high ten strikeouts, allowed two runs and four hits. Koehler has been in a consistent groove lately and has been a good contributor to the Marlins starting rotation as of late.
The Bronx native has an ERA of 3.90 and 125 strikeouts in 29 appearances this season. His next start is scheduled for September 22 in a divisional home game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are last in the NL East standings this season. (56-90).
