Stony Brook University has cancelled all classes and events for Monday, Oct. 29 due to Hurricane Sandy and its accompanying weather systems, according to the Stony Brook University Emergency Operations Center.
“This applies to Stony Brook, SB Southampton, and SB Manhattan campuses and includes the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Health Technology & Management, School of Social Welfare, and the Dental School,” read a post from emergency management.
Emergency Management warns Students of winds expected to measure between 30-50 mph, with gusts reaching upwards of 70 mph through Monday and into the evening.
Currently, the National Weather Service has all of Long Island solely under a hurricane force wind warning, but a hurricane warning is present just off of the coast of New Jersey.
Winds around 40 mph are expected to begin momentarily, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph later tonight. Precipitation is definite, beginning tomorrow morning and possible gusts will increase to 60 mph. Both are predicted to continue through Tuesday midday, according to the National Weather Service.
Significant coastal flooding is predicted from 6 am Monday to 3 pm Tuesday, with “astronomical high tides” reaching 2-10 feet about average, according to emergency management.
The brunt of the storm is expected to clear by Wednesday morning, with a possibility of showers continuing until Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
