Long-rumored cuts and consolidations of academic departments may be on the way much sooner than previously thought, according to members of the Provost search committee at Stony Brook.

“I expect Eric [Kaler] to try and manage the cuts before the new provost arrives,” said Michael Schwartz, a professor in the sociology department, in response to an audience question at a town hall meeting. “Any academic cuts will probably be done by Provost Kaler,” he added.

With Eric Kaler scheduled to leave his post on June 30, any cuts he would be able to manage would have to be announced in the next few months.

Stony Brook University’s administration was not immediately able to comment.

The exchange came in the middle of a town hall meeting held by the Provost search committee. Read our full report from the meeting here.
