This has been an exciting time for the movie industry. From the action-packed adventures of the Marvel franchise, to the intimate drama “The Shape of Water,” came a movie that really takes the silver screen to the mind.
With a 95 percent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, “A Quiet Place,” starring John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, is an almost entirely silent film that sends a powerful message to the viewing audience. What I liked the most about the film was the use of American Sign Language and imagination based on perception, while hiding within a world taken over by dark, carnivorous creatures.
John Krasinski, best known for playing Jim Halpert on the television show “The Office,” doesn’t just act as Lee Abbot, the father in this film — he also makes his directorial debut. For years, we have been given this perspective on how horror movies are supposed to be — the type of creatures, screams at every turn, suspensful music played in the background, ghosts and other tropes that plague the genre.. Almost similar to the films “Cloverfield” and “Insidious” in its typical horror film. What separates John Krasinski from other directors is that he encourages a deeper meaning in horror films. he was encouraged to find a young actress who is deaf in real life for the film. I thought this was an excellent move because it encourages other Hollywood films to give deaf actors and actresses a chance at bigger roles . The actress who plays his daughter Regan Abbot, Millicent Simmonds, isan inspiration for change in the film industry. Her character’s journey was extraordinary because of her strength when dealing with the vicious monsters that rely on sound to attack their prey. In learning how to defend herself, it’s intense and heartbreaking to watch as she struggles to survive with various types of hearing aids. I will not spoil the ending for you, but let’s just say that her courage rose above and beyond my expectations.
John Krasinski has made this movie educational as well. Since their daughter Regan is deaf, the Abbot family speaks only in sign language around her so they’ll be safe. For a movie that barely has sound, there’s a lot of tension and intensity between the characters. I thought that was a clever move on the director’s part.
Overall, if you’re looking to exercise your imagination with a stream of intense, nail-biting entertainment, look no further than “A Quiet Place.” Though the end has a climatic cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more, I must say that this film was above and beyond a typical suspenseful horror film. With its ability to present a story of a family surviving against creatures that walk in the shadows, it also shows us the powerful strength and perseverance of those who are deaf.
