Extending the longest winning streak in the nation to 15, the Stony Brook Seawolves (19-4) came into the Costello Athletic Center and beat the UMass Lowell River Hawks (8-15) 91-73. For the second consecutive time, SBU had five players in double-digits. SBU remains undefeated in conference play at 10-0.
“I’m really pleased with today’s effort,” Stony Brook Head Coach Steve Pikiell said. “We were able to get the ball inside to Jameel [Warney] in the first half and he provided the spark.”
Senior Jameel Warney led the team with 24 points and 14 rebounds, notching his 16th double-double of the season. He went 10-14 from the field and also had three assists, two steals and a block. Warney has scored 20 points or more for the 12th time this season.
Senior Carson Puriefoy finished second in scoring with 17 points as he made half of his shots and connected on three three-point shots. He crashed the glass hard and earned nine rebounds with three of them being offensive and added two assists, rebounds and blocks in 38 minutes. 14 of his 17 points came in the second half when SBU put up a season high 54 points.
Junior Lucas Woodhouse concluded with a season-high 16 points on 6-11 shooting with four of those six shots made being three-pointers. He has made eight threes in his past two games and has been shooting the ball at an unfathomable percentage from deep at 62 percent. He also had three assists and three steals in only 22 minutes of action.
Junior Ahmad Walker tallied 15 points, five rebounds and two assists. Senior Rayshaun McGrew totaled 11 points, six rebounds and a block. Both players had 27 minutes of playing time.
“We’re doing everything we can to come together as a team,” Walker said in the post-game press conference. “The great thing about this team is that everyone tries to put each other in a position to score.”
For the River Hawks, freshman Isaac White, sophomore Matt Harris and senior Mark Cornelius were the three players to surpass double digits. White led UMass Lowell with 20 points going 7-9 from the field and 6-8 from three-point range. He also had three assists, three rebounds and a steal. Cornelius concluded with 11 points, five rebounds and a steal. Harris also had 11 points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
UMass Lowell drops to 4-5 at home this season. In their loss to SBU, they turned the ball over 15 times which was a huge factor. Junior Tyler Livingston was the only one not to turnover the ball for the River Hawks. Redshirt freshman Dontavious Smith and Cornelius both led with three turnovers each.
SBU shot over 50 percent on a season high 36 made field goals. They have reached 30 made field goals for the 11th time this season. They also made nine three-pointers on 37.5 percent, made 10 free throws and shot 71.4 from there. They were 7-8 from free throws in the second half. When SBU makes at least six three-point field goals or more, they are 18-0 this season.
UMass Lowell made 26 field goals and shot a shade under 43 percent. They had the same number of three-point attempts as SBU at 24 but made one better than SBU shooting 41.7 percent from deep. However, they were not able to convert from the foul line as they made 20 trips and only made 11, shooting 55 percent. They were outscored by nine in each half (37-28, 54-45).
Since UMass Lowell joined Division I play in the 2013-2014 season, Stony Brook has won all six meetings.
SBU heads back to Island Federal Credit Union Arena on Monday night to host the Hartford Hawks (7-17) at 7:00 p.m.. They are also undefeated at home (10-0).
