Stony Brook had a lot to look forward to going into this evening’s homecoming game but Towson ultimately upset the Seawolves 21-14.
The game started well for Stony Brook. After taking an early 7-0 lead the Seawolves capitalized on a muffed punt and went ahead early 14-0. Those would end up being the last points Stony Brook would score.
After stopping and holding the Tigers on fourth down in the second quarter Stony Brook took over with great field possession on the Tiger’s side of the field. During the drive Stony Brook fumbled, Towson recovered and returned the fumble all the way for a touchdown.
After the return, Stony Brook looked like a different team. The offense looked streaky and had problems converting on third down. Towson also began to wear down the Stony Brook defense and started stealing chunks of yards running the ball.
After Towson took a 21-14 lead Stony Brook got the ball back with 50 seconds left on the clock. The Seawolves took numerous shots towards the end zone but on the last play of the game the Tigers picked off the ball, sealing the win for Towson.
This is the second year in a row Stony Brook has lost its homecoming game. Last year, William & Mary bested the Seawolves in overtime.
Looking ahead to the future Stony Brook will look to dust off from its third straight loss at Maine next Saturday before returning home to face Elon on Halloween.
