Stony Brook to Help Launch New York State Resiliency Institute for Storms & Emergencies
Stony Brook University and NYU will be leading the new New York State Resiliency Institute for Storms & Emergencies, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Thursday, Oct. 30.
“We must prepare for the increased likelihood of extreme weather events, and part of that effort is creating an academic environment for the study and research of resilience and preparedness to guide policy discussions,” Governor Cuomo said. “The New York State Resiliency Institute for Storms and Emergencies will bring together several of our State’s top universities to help provide a resource of in-depth scientific information as New York continues to develop strategies to better prepare for natural disasters.”
NY RISE will be a think-tank made up of government officials, emergency response leaders, academic leaders and national experts who will provide information on how to respond to critical weather incidents.
Columbia University, Cornell University, City University of New York and Brookhaven National Laboratory will also be contributing to the team.
Stony Brook Dental Care Center Reaches Under-Served Populations
The School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook opened its expanded Dental Care Center to provide treatment for 20 percent more patients annually, on Oct. 24.
“Oral health care is integral to overall health, and this expansion will have an enormous impact on the health of many more patients,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine. “The Dental Care Center has a broad reach within our Long Island community. As a result of its affordable fees and participation in dental Medicaid programs, the Center has become the safety net for the poor, for pediatric and geriatric patients with medical conditions, and for patients with special needs.”
The newly renovated and expanded center was funded largely by a $3.17 million New York State Health Care Efficiency and Affordability Law Grant and matching funds supported by the School of Dental Medicine.
“As a result of the HEAL grant, we are able to deliver outstanding oral health care services to a larger portion of the underserved population in Suffolk County, both in our expanded Dental Care Center, and at a variety of locations through the use of our mobile dental clinic,” said Allan Kucine, DDS, HEAL Project Manager and Acting Chair of the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
The center now includes 35 new operatories and a dental emergency clinic.
