Before The Stony Brook Press broke out for winter break, we gathered some of our magazine’s most voracious music nerds to chop up what were the best releases of 2017.

Our discussion of music this year was mostly focused on hip hop. That comes as no surprise when it surpassed rock as America’s most listened genre this year. This year big names like Jay Z and Kendrick Lamar made a lot of noise as usual. On the other end of the spectrum, SoundCloud rappers dominated the charts with major label releases from “mumble rappers” like Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti and Lil Pump.
