A Thinking Computer “Do I have a soul?” I type the question with a sly smile on my face, thinking that if I press the philosophy button hard enough, the artificial intelligence program will retreat. A tiny blue line flashes up and down to indicate it is formulating its response. Just a few minutes earlier, the Internet chatbot had quickly upended the conversation we were having by insisting that I was in fact the program and it was the human being. It was an interesting, yet eerie, maneuver on the programming end, and I decided to go along with its little game and give it a couple fast balls with questions about my nature as a computer.
