Middleweights Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza both won their last bouts decisively at UFC on Fox 15 in Newark, New Jersey, on April 18. Both fighters are deserving of a title shot against the winner of Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort. Weidman will look to defend his belt at UFC 187 on May 23. Souza was the front-runner to earn the next title shot a couple weeks prior to the event, where the winner of his match with Yoel Romero would have likely earned the chance at the belt. Romero suffered an injury and pulled out of the fight with a torn meniscus, leaving Souza to face Chris Camozzi instead. On paper, Camozzi was a total mismatch for Jacaré, and that turned out to be the case in the octagon as well. Like his first fight against Camozzi, Souza submitted him in the first round, this time via armlock.…

New York Mets closing pitcher Jenrry Mejia was suspended for 80 games by Major League Baseball after he tested positive for the steroid Stanozolol. After having high hopes for the bullpen during spring training, the Mets are disappointed that they’ve lost yet another important pitcher.  Right-handed relievers Bobby Parnell and Vic Black should be back soon after battling injuries. Mets third baseman and captain David Wright wasn’t shy about expressing his own frustration on the topic. “Not only do you cost yourself 80 games and don’t get paid, but you’re letting down your teammates,” said Wright. “He messed up, and he needs to be punished.” Mejia’s fellow players were not the only ones who were put off by his decision. Stony Brook University sophomore Andy Cano said Mejia has lost his respect. “When you look up to players, they have integrity to uphold, and he’s lost it.  He knew he…

Washington Capitals vs. New York Islanders This will be an entertaining series between two high-octane offenses.  John Tavares, Kyle Okposo, Anders Lee and Ryan Strome lead the Isles into battle against Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson of the Caps.  Both teams sport two great defensemen with offensive prowess.  The Isles Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy will match up on the blueline against Mike Green and John Carlson for the Caps.  The series may very well come down to the goaltenders.  When they’re hot, Jaroslav Halak and Braden Holtby are studs between the pipes for the Islanders and Capitals respectively.  The Islanders will have to stay out of the penalty box so killers like Ovechkin and Backstrom don’t get to do their thing.  In the end, the Isles more balanced offensive attack might be the difference. Prediction- Islanders win series 4-2 New York Rangers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins After earning…

Ask a student at Stony Brook what sports they think about when it comes to their school’s teams. Odds are they’ll either say men’s football, basketball or both. After all, those are the two most popular NCAA sports. But over the past couple of seasons, neither team has lived up to its full potential.  The Seawolves football squad is 10-13 over the past two years.  The basketball team has posted a solid 20-10 record so far this season, but their hopes of entering the March Madness competition fell short after losing the AEC Championship game to Albany. There are some pretty underrated teams here at the university that students haven’t paid much attention to. The men’s baseball team is one. While they have a mediocre 10-11 record to start the season, it’s important to keep in mind that they have a solid 7-4 record at home at Joe Nathan Field.…

Islanders (Michael) There are several reasons why the Islanders are the better team than the Rangers when it comes to hockey in New York, both currently and historically.  While the teams are neck and neck in the standings right now, it’s not farfetched to think the Islanders will win the division when the season is said and done and do some damage in the playoffs. To start, the Islanders have one of the best players in the NHL on their team, John Tavares, who is better than any player the Rangers have on offense, despite Rick Nash being near the top of the league on goals.  The Isles captain has a very good chance of winning the Hart Trophy for the NHL’s MVP, and the Art Ross for leading the league in points. The team is continuing to win without their second best forward, Kyle Okposo, who had surgery on…

Mets (Michael) Spring training is underway, which means regular season baseball is right around the corner. The Mets will be looking to have a better campaign than the Yankees and they have a very good shot to do so. The Mets not only have a better starting pitching staff than the Yankees; they have one of the best in the league.  The Mets’ ace, Matt Harvey will be coming back from Tommy John surgery to reunite with other young studs like Zack Wheeler and Jon Niese, as well as Bartolo Colon and last season’s Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom.  That doesn’t even include Dillon Gee, as well as prospects Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz. I’ll take that pitching corps any day over the aging CC Sabathia, injury prone Michael Pineda, the underachieving Ivan Nova, Nathan Eovaldi and journeyman Chris Capuano.  They do have a gem in Masahiro Tanaka though…
