The Film

Godzilla is very well directed and well-acted. The film really makes you feel as if this situation is actually occurring. The CGI is top notch and the score by Alexandre Desplat is never misplaced. It always fits and captures the excitement of each scene.  Overall, Godzilla is a film that I would highly recommend to any viewer who enjoys giant monster movies and knows how to be patient with films. Gareth Edwards did not make this film for the summer audience. He took the right approach by making it for the fans.

Picture and Audio Quality

Godzilla arrives on blu ray with a stunning transfer and a lossless 7.1 DTS-HD audio track. In simpler terms, it looks and sounds nothing short of perfect. Some have complained that the picture is too dark and that it is extremely difficult to see what is going on. I can assure you that this is false. The darkness blends in naturally with each scene and the black levels add depth to the picture. This is a film which should be viewed at night in a dark room. The audio quality of the disc is outstanding. The dialogue is never too low nor is the action ever too loud. It is a perfect film to show off your home theater with.

The Extra Features

There are some neat extras which serve as an incentive to purchase this disc. These include “Operation Lucky Dragon,” “Monarach: The M.U.T.O. File,” “The Godzilla Revelation,” and “Godzilla: Force of Nature.” The opening credits of the film depict scenes of the military attempting to kill Godzilla with nuclear weapons in the Pacific in 1954. These extras take this a bit further by showing more about this in a documentary-like fashion. There are other neat extras as well, which show how the effects team created the state-of-the-art CGI featured in the film. There is another one worth watching in which Gareth Edwards and the crew elaborate on filming the aftermath of the destruction in the film. I would have liked to see a feature-length documentary or an audio commentary but unfortunately the disc contains neither. The extra features are still worth watching though.

Overall Score: 4/5

Overall Recommendation

I would highly recommend that you add this blu ray disc to your home video library. The film is terrific, the picture and audio are flawless and the extras are worth checking out. If you are going to purchase any new release this month, I suggest that you choose this one.
